Green IT

A key aspect of Digital Links’ work is to limit strain on the world’s resources and help protect the environment. Every computer we distribute has been requested by the recipient organisation and is fully functional with at least three to five years of life remaining.

Hundreds of millions of PCs, laptops, monitors and printers become obsolete each year; over three million PCs annually end up in UK landfill. Many of these are fully functional and have many years of life remaining. When dumped, the hazardous materials contained in some computer parts are highly toxic when mishandled and so must be disposed of safely.

Reuse is the best form of recycling, and donating computers to charity will help you to meet your legal and ethical environmental obligations. Working computers are reused and any faulty machines are fully recycled. Nothing goes to landfill.

Recent UN research indicates that passing a computer on for reuse is 20 times more effective than recycling at saving lifecycle energy. Manufacture of just one desktop PC uses 1.8 tonnes of raw materials. Additionally each PC diverted from landfill removes 25 Kg of waste. The 65,000 PCs reused by Digital Links have therefore diverted over 1,600 tons of e-waste from landfill.

Because of the amount of resources required to manufacture new PCs it is essential to get maximum possible usage out of each and every computer. To create just one desktop PC uses 1.8 tons of raw materials including a whopping 250 kilograms of fossil fuels.

By donating redundant IT assets to Digital Links you are not only meeting your obligations under UK and EU law, but also reducing landfill, decreasing the energy needed to allow ICT access in the developing world and ensuring a closed loop as Digital Links works to establish an end-of-life solution on the continent.
