FAQs
Are you compliant with the WEEE legislation?
Yes. We are fully compliant with the legislation. We provide a full
audit trail, and we have a 'no landfill' policy, so any items that
cannot be reused are completely recycled.
What is the minimum specification that you
accept?
The minimum specifications accepted for reuse are Pentium III
processors with a 733Mhz processor speed, 128Mb RAM and a 10Gb hard
drive. We accept 15" and 17" monitors. All items need to be in working
order.
What about equipment that is below the minimum
specification?
We can collect this if it is accompanied by equipment of a higher
specification, but as it would need to be recycled, the costs of
recycling computers and other equipment will be passed to you. We do
our best to ensure that these costs are minimal by partnering with
professional asset management and environmental disposal companies.
Do you take non-working equipment?
We can take non-working equipment if it is accompanied by working
equipment, as we provide a one-stop IT disposal service. We recycle
computers and other equipment.
Why do you have a minimum number of items?
Given the high costs of collection, in order to keep our operations
cost-effective we generally require a minimum of 50 items. We will
sometimes collect less if the equipment is in working condition and is
high spec.
Do you take office furniture?
No, we do not currently take office furniture, but we do have a
partnership with Green Works, a charity that who can help in this area.
See www.green-works.co.uk for more information.
Are there any costs involved?
In some instances we are able to collect equipment for free, however,
this depends on the quantity and spec of the computers. We can also
often offset some of the collection and refurbishment costs against the
value of laptops or higher specification items. Please contact us for
more information.
Can I find out who my computer benefits?
Yes, we keep a full report on what happens to the computers we send,
from their collection, right to the country and community to whom they
are sent. This means that we can tell you exactly who your old
computers are benefitting, which can have significant PR benefits, both
internally and externally.
What happens to the computers once they have come to the end
of their life in Africa?
We are the only organisation working to recycle end of life machines in
Africa and the return of those components that cannot be reused locally
to our recycling partners in the UK. We have piloted a programme in
Ghana that, once fully established, will recycle most components
locally, and re-export hazardous materials back to Europe.
Additionally, Digital Links has developed an end of life recycling
solution for removal of hazardous e-waste in Africa by re-importing
materials from over 3,500 end of life PCs back to UK for proper safe
disposal. For further information on the recycling programmes please
visit our Green IT
page.
